Friday was a fun day for Avery and all the kids at ACS. It was Olympic Day! Whoever was in charge of organizing and setting up did a great job! The morning started off with the raising of the Olympic flag. I actually got a little emotional watching this..I don't know why? I guess with the Olympic theme song playing, seeing all the flags representing the different countries, and all the kids standing around the flagpole...it was a little touching. The Olympic and Paralympics mascots were there which the kids really loved. Avery did ask me why the mascots have just one eye? I didn't really know the answer at the time. After researching, I discovered the single eye is actually a camera that allows them to capture images of the people they meet, places they go, and the sports they will try on their journey to the Olympics. Also, the torch from Beijing was there and I had my picture taken with it after I put on white gloves before holding it. After opening ceremonies, all the kids went to different stations (inside and outside) playing different Olympic and Paralympic games. I was in charge of Goalball. It's a game that blind people play. It's kinda like soccor but you roll the ball to try to get it into the goal. The ball has bells in it so the people listen for where its rolling and try to block the goal. We blindfolded the kids and they were able to get a perspective of how the blind play the game. It was very interesting. There was a paralympian there who plays volleyball. She shared with the kids how they train and prepare to go to the Paralympics. She answered questions from the kids about her disability (her legs don't work due to a virus she contracted). The day ended with the closing ceremonies. It was a great time for all the kids and even the adults!
