To the top of the Belfry

We took advantage of the bank holiday on Monday and headed for Bruges, Belgium. It is the chocolate capital of the world so of course we visited the Chocolate museum. We learned how chocolate is made from cocoa beans which are predominantly grown in South America. All of the facts about the history of cocoa and chocolate was very interesting, but the sample at the end of tour was the best!
We also visited a hospital which dated back to the 14th century. The medicine back then was mostly for the soul. We climbed to the top of the Belfry (366 vertical steps). The bells tolled while we were at the top. It was neat, but loud! Avery's favorite part of the trip was the horse drawn carriage ride around town on the cobblestone roads. Our horse was named Marcel. The carriage driver gave us some history along the way. There were many buildings over 700 years old. Amazing! The canal boat ride through the town was nice, but would have been better if it was warmer. The temperature never got out of the 40's!

The shops were very nice and yes we spent plenty of Euros along the way. However, the Belgian waffles were the best! They are served in most eateries with any kind of sauce, fruit, and whipped cream you could want! Yum!
A nice weekend for a quick get away.
